Geography
At 2,400 feet (730 meters), Tucson is
surrounded by mountains. To the east and northeast stand the high and forested
Santa Catalinas where Mount Lemmon looms at 9,157 ft. (2,791 m.).
The land swells and drops again and again
past the eastern Rincon Mountains, the southern Santa Rita mountains, the
western Tucson Mountains with Wasson Peak at 4,687 ft. (1,428 m.), and
finally to the Tortolitas of the north.
Between these pass three major waterways,
dry until the summer monsoons, the Santa Cruz River following the Interstates
northward, Rillito Creek falling from the Santa Catalinas, and Pantano
Wash coming in from the southeast.
