Audit Approves Erie Service Referrals An audit conducted by the Office of the New York State Comptroller found that Erie County is adequately performingservice referrals for public assistance recipients who are self identified as domestic violence victims. The office of ErieCounty Executive Joel Giambra notes that of six counties evaluated, Erie was the only county meeting the standards.Giambra says reforming the social service program is one of his goals for 2001. Lawmakers Oppose Job Outsourcing Members of the Erie County Legislature are opposing New Era Cap Company's decision to out source jobs to nonunionand nonlocal workers. Earlier this year, New Era laid off 125 employees, all union members of the CommunicationWorkers of America. The company also has plans to let another 100 go by June. The work these union employees havebeen performing will go to three nonunion plants, one located in the city Buffalo, and the others in Alabama. Erie CountyLegislature Chairman Charles Swanick says they are encouraging all parties to return to the negotiating table anddevelop a compromise in good faith. The New Era Cap Company produces all the on-field caps for major and minorleague baseball, the NBA, NFL and NHL among others. Seen Arrested In Playground Stabbing Tonawanda Police have arrested 17-year-old Joseph Mueller of Buffalo in connection to a playground stabbing. Thecrime occurred last night on the playground of the Stanley Falk School in Tonawanda. Police reports state that a groupof people pulled up in a car after seven o'clock and started a fight with some boys playing basketball. During the scuffle,16-year-old Isaiah White of Tonawanda was stabbed in the chest. White was taken to ECMC and is currently listed infair condition. Mueller has been charged with first degree assault, criminal possession of a deadly weapon and facesadditional charges. Charges are pending against others involved in the incident. The investigation continues.
