In the few years preceding the American Revolution, the city of Boston was
a powder keg just waiting to explode. It was the hotbed of anti-British
sentiment, but it was also the garrison of several thousand British troops
--a sure recipe for conflict. In March of 1770, some of these troops responded
to a snowball attack by local young men by firing back, killing five colonists.
John Hancock, speaking several years later on the anniversary of what was
remembered as the Boston Massacre, recalled why this event should be the rallying
cry to rid America of the British. In his Boston Massacre Oration Adams calls upon
the honor of his listeners to avenge this massacre. Paul Revere, a Boston engraver,
made an engraving of the event The Bloody Massacre that was widely printed and
sold in the colonies as a piece of propaganda to keep anti-British sentiments alive.

Why visit Boston by Sea? Romance, rogues, and revolution are three fine reasons,
all eminently etched on the handsome coastline and picturesque islands that comprise
Boston Harbor. The romance can be found in lonely lighthouses, candle-lit seafood
dinners, walks along the water's edge, sunset harbor cruises, and stories of swift
nineteenth-century clipper ships. The roguery is easily discovered in tales of ancient
pirates, fugitive slave catchers, enemy spies, and haunted hideouts.Revolution, of
course,is the most obvious element, forever commemorated in cries like Paul Revere's
mythic"one if by land, two if by sea," and the patriot promise to make "Boston Harbor a
teapottonight!" Revolution-the foundation of Boston's Freedom Trail,a America's
quintessential, historic walking tour-is also apparent in the numerous technological
innovations that began in Boston, one of the world's most important historic seaports.
Romance, rogues, and revolution, however, are only the tip of the iceberg. The
nativesettlers here called the place Shawmut, or "land of living waters," while
English colonists renamed it Boston-a contraction of "St. Botolph's town." the patron
saint of boatmakers. Today,Boston's scenic waters are a recreation destination,
replete with whale watches, bathing beaches, boat excursions, fishing, fresh seafood,
and water sports. They are also a creative educational center, featuring a world-class
Aquarium, Children's Museum, Computer Museum, and the USS Constitution Museum, as well
as the famous "Old Ironsides," World War II warships, Civil War fortresses, and a
recreated Tea Party ship. Mercantile and commercial interests-not to mention happy
shoppers everywhere-will delight in the restaurants and shops on and near Long Wharf
and old Dock Square (now Faneuil Hall Marketplace), in addition to the old Custom House,
the Boston Fish Pier, and a plethora of other active piers and wharves. So why visit
Boston by Sea? As maritime chronicler Edward Rowe Snow observed in The Islands of Boston
Harbor, "America, the new world, compares in glamour and romance with the old, and Boston
Harbor is one of the most delightful places in America."

BOSTON BY SEA: THE MARITIME TRAIL will help you explore these delights by boat, foot,
or trolley. It's
a great way to discover, and even rediscover, Boston.
